Nikon says “Canon G1X is for fanboys”. And Canon says “Mirrorless is great” (via techradar)

Amy from Techradar (Click here) first interviewed MR. James Loader, product manager for the Nikon Coolpix range. And here are his thoughts about the Canon G1X: “I was a little bit surprised. I thought we’d see the compact system camera first. A lot of people seem to think that the sensor inside that is what they will eventually use in a possible future CSC camera. The G1 X, at that price point, is a super kind of niche market, just for Canon fanboys if I’m completely honest. It’s not something that I anticipated from them.” But he also thinks a real interchangeable mirrorless system from Canon is coming: “I don’t think they would be happy to let Nikon and Panasonic and all the other competitors take the lead on this.

And than she interviewed Mr. David Parry from Canon UK (Click here), “I think they (mirrorless) are a great idea. What I like about them so much is that it’s brought more people into photography and the more people shooting, the better, as far an imaging company is concerned – that’s what we’re all about. Obviously, people were expecting to see CSC (mirrorless) having an effect on DSLR sales, but actually they’re still growing.” And talking about the G1X: “It’s a similar kind of price to compact system cameras with a similar size sensor inside them, and once they’ve purchased that they might look at our DSLRs.

P.S.: There is a Canon G1x full test at Focus Numerique (Click here). Preorders are available at Amazon (Click here), Adorama (Click here) and BHphoto (Click here).

Nikon 1 future (and Nikon financial report).

After that huge Fuji and Pentax news/rumor stream it’s time to talk about Nikon. First of all like Sony and Canon also Nikon had to report an ‘extraordinary’ loss (about $143 million) due to Thailand floods (Source: Electronista). Nikon 1 sales are doing well particulary in USA. But some of their new DSLR launch had to be postponed due the production issues. This is a bad news for a company that unlike the others has the camera business as their main core. Anyaywa, I hope they can recover soon and Nikon already gave us some hints about the future Nikon 1 system development:

Nikon told at Dpreview that the Nikon 1 sensor is capable of 2k and 4k sensor. This means future professional could support this. I am wondering if that also means that current cameras support this via firmware upgrade…yeah I know I am just dreaming. They also will add manual focus on future V1 bodies, improved hybrid AF and in camera RAW editing. One more news is that they are working on new fast CX lenses.

There is no hint yet about a future new mirrorless system with larger sensor. But sooner or later they will have to do it to cath up with Sony, Fuji and probably Canon.

Canon G1X gets DxOmarked. And image comparison with Nikon/Sony/Olympus

The new Canon G1X got DxOmarked (Click here). On paper the Canon is on par with current Micro Four Thirds cameras but far behind the newest Sony NEX cameras. But you know we love to see REAL world comparisons and Imaging Resource (Click here) fulfilled that duty and posted an ISO comparison between the Canon and other big mirrorless cameras: “Fine detail on the G1 X looks quite good, though it’s bested by the T3i and NEX-5N, an outcome we’d expect. As ISO rises, contrast and saturation tend to decrease in the G1 X, while it stays stronger in the T3i, E-P3, and NEX-5N. The J1 and G12 appear to be out of the running for this contest“.

While the G1X is definitely an interesting product it’s still not enough to seriously compete against the mirrorless and interchangeable systems. But I think Canon is coming with the real BIG thing at Photokina… :)

Preorders are available at Amazon (Click here), Adorama (Click here) and BHphoto (Click here).

And the most (pre)ordered mirrorless camera of the moment is…the Fuji X PRO 1!

Guess which camera is on top of the mirrorless camera ranking at Amazon (Click here to see the ranking)? Despite the high price the Fuji X PRO 1 (click to preorder now) sells like hotcakes! A wonder how sales will be in Europe were preorders didn’t start yet. I guess Fuji was serious when they told us months ago that they want to become the number three of the digital camera market!
