Canon & Nikon Full-frame Mirrorless Camera Predictions by Tony Northrup

Tony writes:

Rumors indicate that Canon and Nikon are planning full-frame mirrorless cameras to compete with the Sony a9, a7R III, and a7 III. If you want to go mirrorless, should you wait for those announcements (hopefully in 2018!) or sell your camera and switch now? We can’t perfectly predict the future, but we’ll do our best to give you some idea of what to expect in 2018.

Nikon patents a new smart in camera stabilization system (for future mirrorless?)

The folks at Nikoneye spotted a new Nikon patent describing a completely new kind of in camera image stabilization system. Instead of stabilizing the entire sensor Nikon plans to stabilize only the lens array on top of the sensor. Nikon writes:

The LF camera 100 of this embodiment is endowed with a VR (Vibration Reduction) function that suppresses influence of shaking (so-called “camera-shaking”) generated when image capture is performed while the camera is being held by hand.

I guess the advantage of this is that you don’t have to move the entire sensor and maybe the image stabilization can work faster (lighter part to move) and in a more reliable way (sensor is always fixed and aligned).

As usual patent mean little. It may well be that Nikon will never use this tech. But at least it shows that they are trying to test some different approaches on the matter.

Canon has a major mirrorless event in mid May. Something big to be announced?

Our trusted sources told us that Canon invited them to a major event in mid May. This includes a flight and a stay in a luxury hotel. Canon told them this event is related to the mirrorless system and specifically to the Canon EOS-M50.

So here the facts do end. And the speculation goes wild for the following reasons:

  1. The sources told us many people were invited and many of them got a Canon invitation for the very first time! Quite an effort for an EOS-M50.
  2. Canon is creating such a big event to talk about a camera that was announced three months ago?

We have no reliable info yet but everyone here is thinking there must be more than just a 2 days talk about the EOS-M50. What if Canon will take the chance to finally announce a FF mirrorless? Just speculation for now but I hope to get some more info soon!
