Canon says yes…Full Frame R camera priced lower than the RP is possible!

EOS Magazine interviewed Michael Burnhill (European Technical Support Manager at Canon Europe). When they asked him if even cheaper Canon EOS-R camera could be introduced in the future he said this:

Do you see a full-frame camera coming in at a price below the RP?

MB: Yes.

I think this shouldn’t come as surprise. The Sony A7II just got a $600 price drop at Buydig, BHphoto, Amazon, Adorama and Focuscamera. You get camera plus lens for under $1,000!!!

Ricoh GR III tested by DPreview TV

The Ricoh GR series is a perennial staff favorite, and in this week’s episode, Chris takes the new GR III to an industrial area, does some street photography in the sunny city, and drinks a tasty beer at a new brewery.

Fuji says “You will be amazed by the image quality of GFX100 coupled with GF lenses”

We are eagerly waiting if the new Fuji GFX100 camera will finally be capable to clearly outperform the Full Frame competition. So far it’s hard to rationally justify the price difference. Fujirumors spotted a new Fuji interview done by Pixel Village and Fuji clearly stated that:

You will be amazed by the image quality of GFX 100 coupled with GF lenses

Here are some more info reposted from Fujirumors:

APS-C vs FF

  • Thanks to APS-C as opposed to FF, the overall cost of the system is lower
  • Fujifilm has no plans to go full frame
  • APS-C has the potential to get more than 26 megapixel, and Fujifilm will look for “opportunities” to go higher in terms of megapixel
  • Megapixel is not everything. Fujifilm should look also at dynamic range, ISO sensitivity and overall image quality
  • Image quality is determinated not only by sensor size, but also by glass
  • Full Frame glass is becoming bigger, heavier and more expensive. APS-C lenses are smaller, bright enough and more affordable

GFX System

  • current 44×33 GFX sensor is more than enough to deliver the best image quality
  • No need to make a camera with even bigger sensor. Would have little benefits in terms of IQ, and big downsides in terms of size, weight and costs
  • Current GFX sensor is 70% larger than full frame
  • You will be amazed by the image quality of GFX 100 coupled with GF lenses

Canon EOS-R High Resolution model coming in late 2019

CanonWatch reports:

We’re told that the next Canon EOS R camera is already field tested by a small group of selected photographers.
The next Canon EOS R camera will have a high resolution sensor. We expect Canon to announced the high resolution EOS R somewhen in Fall 2019. We still have no reliable information about the resolution but you can expect a sensor between 50MP and 70MP.

The question is if Canon will finally make a new generation sensor that can be nearly as good as Sony. And no crop in 4k would be nice too…but I guess I am dreaming :(
