First images of the Canon R1 spotted at the F1 Grand Prix in Monaco

Federico Basile has spotted the first pre production Canon R1 camera at the F1 Grand Prix in Monaco!

You can read the full press text on Explora but here are the key interesting aspects:

  • It’s going to use a new CMOS sensor (so no global shutter)
  • Uses a variation of the current Digic X processor of the Canon R3.
  • promises to have the best in class autofocus…beating the Sony A1 and Sony A9III AF system.
  • Will be field tested at the Olympics

Just announced: new Leica D-LUX 8

Leica just announced the new D-LUX8. You can reorder it now at BHphoto, Adorama. A full introduction can be read at Explora. There are only a few changes from the previous D-LUX 7:

Leica tuned the design and controls to look and feel like that of a Q series or even M camera. The controls have been refined and connectivity has been modernized with the Leica FOTOS app.

The cool nonsense combo: Sigma 200-500mm lens mounted on the S9

Panasonic had the brilliant idea of launching an ultra-compact Lumix S9 without an ultra-compact autofocus lens to accompany it. Instead we have a 26mm f/8.0 with manual focus and an 18-40mm zoom lens that won’t be delivered until late 2024.

But to distract us from this glaring lack, we share this video of Tom Calton testing the monstrous Sigma 200-500mm lens on the Lumix S9:

And this is more “serious” Lumix S9 review :)

Panasonic announced the new Lumix S9 compact camera with entirely new LUT ecosystem and APP

Today Panasonic announced the new S9 L-mount compact camera. But what is interesting for MFT photographers is that they also announced a new, much improved LUT system. Something that definitely has the potential to compete with Fuji film styles. Panasonic made this How To video to show you the new features:

And here is PetapIxels review of the camera:

The super odd camera launch delay: Canon 12 months without new camera announcement, Nikon 8 months and Sony 6 months!

It is strange to note that the big three companies have not announced a new camera model for a long time. It seems like all the cameras announced in 2024 are just from FujiFilm :)

All joking aside, I really have no idea what’s going on… but it’s certainly unusual in the history of the digital camera industry. Let’s hope they can catch up in the second half of the year!
