First Lytro Illum review (and some more Lytro news)

The most unusual mirrorless (fixed lens) camera on market is certainly the Lytro Illum. It is shipping now at Amazon and BHphoto. If you want to learn more about the camera read the full review at ePhotozine:

“The camera is quite large and bulky and does take some time to get to grips with, particularly in regards to the best way to take photos. Manual focus over-ride is beneficial for getting the best results from the camera. Plus, this makes you think about how you are taking photos and what elements you want to be in focus, or rather what elements you want to be re-focusable. This is a completely different way of thinking compared to traditional photography as traditionally, you would have one item in focus and control the depth of focus using the aperture. However, with the Lytro Illum, as there is the creative potential to have a much larger area in focus (without having to stop down to a much smaller aperture), it is best used in creating photos with a number of elements at different distances from the camera. Outputting still images from the Lytro Illum is not the intended goal of the camera, creating interactive images is and at this, the camera excels.

P.S.: Also de popular German Magazine Der Spiegel tested the Kamera. The Lytro Illum will be released on December 12 in Japan (DC.watch). A report about the Japan presentation can be found at Itmedia.

The biggest hit at Photokina? It could be the Samsung NX1!

Well, we are slowly getting a clear picture about what’s coming.

1) Sony will focus on their A-mount stuff and “only” announced lenses for their mirrorless system (Zeiss Loxia and “normal” FE Sony lenses).

2) Panasonic will announce the LX1000 (fixed lens) and GM2 4K capable cameras

3) Olympus will announced the E-Pl7 today and is coming with a Silver E-M1 and new 40-150mm Pro lenses in a few days.

4) Canon/Nikon: Nothing serious on the horizon

5) Fuji “could” but also “could not” showcase a prototype of the 2015 X-PRO 2

So what could become the big hit at Photokina? Well it will come from an unexpected company: Samsung!

I have been told by sources the camera has the potential to become the best APS-C camera on market. It has a terrific EVF, over 10fps, brand new close to 30MP sensor and fastest AF on market. It looks like a modern camera (no retro style says redcrow).

I really can’t wait to learn more about that camera….

Sigma DP2 Quattro shows impressive performance compared to the Sony A7r and Leica S medium format!

Lesnumeriques (google translation here) compared the new Sigma DP2 Quattro quality against the Sony A7r and Leica S2. As you can see from the High Resolution images on their page at ISO 100 the Sigma shows an amazing sharpness and detail. Just imaging if Sigma would make a FF or even MF Foveon sensor!
