First Canon EOS-R5 overheating test from Tony Northrup

Tony Northrup is doing everything possible to be hated by the Canon folks :)

Joke aside he made the first in depth test of the overheating “problem” of the EOS-R5. In 8k30p when used outside under direct sun the camera did shut down around 15 minutes (which is 5min less than the “official” Canon mentioned limit).

Do’h! Tony Northrup says in reality the Canon EOS-R5 is a 4k30p camera (because other recording modes are crippled)

It’s fun how the Internet keeps hitting hard on the EOS-R5. Somehow the Canon Cripple Hammer did come into action the very last minute :)

Tony Northrup sums up the “potential!” problems with the EOS-R5:

  • There are no independent reviews yet. Canon did not allow the few reviewers to test many aspects of the camera. Gordon Laing from CamerLabs for example was told explicitly to NOT talk about Rolling Shutter. All revivers could not share full size image samples
  • Only 4k30p allows for unlimited recording. All other recording modes are limited because of overheating.
  • There is a small 1.05x crop in 4K mode. Nothing serious but still Canon advertised this as “no crop” 4K camera.
  • It has an AA filter which might reduces sharpness of the stills images

Don’t worry Canonistas, as soon as the Sony A7sIII comes out the Internet will start to bash the Sony :)

Canon EOS-R5 video recording features may be crippled due to overheating issues?

8K wow….4k120fps wow! On paper this EOS-R5 is a super camera. But how does this translate in the reality? Canon upfront disclosed that there are some serious limitations. For example you can only shoot 8K video for 20minutes at room temperature. Which means that if you shoot outside under direct sunshine or in a hot day you might not be able to shoot 8K at all. Also the cooling time is quite long and will only allow you to shoot even shorter videos after (see tab on top).

Max Yuryev explained it well:

This is not to downplay Canon merits. But it should be clear to everyone that if you wanna do some more “serious” video work this camera might NOT be for you!
