Holga mirrorless system Open Source project (We like it!).

Saikat Biswas designed that nice Holga D mirrorless system camera. it’s just a concept not a REAL camera. Saikat says: “The biggest ‘feature’ of the Holga D is lack of features! It has absolute bare minimum feature set that you need for unobtrusive photography.

And the cool thing is that Saikat plans to realize that camera by creating an open source platform! Find out more detail about the proposal of Open-source camera platform here. To realize the project you must it would be great if you could spread the word and pull in people who you think would be able to contribute to the development of Holga D!!!

I really think the idea is amazing. That is something big companies should have done before, create an open source camera! Thanks Saikat for that project! We will keep an eye on you! :)

Mirrorless market share shrinking in Japan. Ricoh, Olympus and Panasonic do fire people.

The one year market share data posted at BCNranking (Click here) shows that mirrorless share felt from 36,7% in December 2010 to 31% in April 2011. I guess this is a normal fluctuation caused by the fact that there have been no new mirrorless cameras and lenses during the last couple of months. I expect the trend to go up again after the Sony-Samsung-Panasonic-Olympus June product announcements!

But there are some bad news too today :(
1) Ricoh plans to cut 9% of its workforce and consolidate factories over the next three years to help boost growth (Photoradar).
2) A month ago Panasonic announced that it will cut 35,000 (overseas) employees (Click here to read that article at 43rumors).
3) The new CEO from Olympus (the brit Michael Woodford) said “he will cut jobs to achieve his mid-term cost targets and reverse what he said was an unacceptable slump in earnings, but would avoid forced redundancies in Japan for cultural reasons.“ (Click here to read that article at 43rumors).

Damn :(

Mirrorless latest news and reviews roundup.

Quesabesde (Click here) posted the Fuji X100 review. Diglloyd (Click here) updated the Fuji X100 review. And Photocomment (Click here) posted a new review. All three articles come more or less to the same conclusion. Nice design, lens and sensor, But lots of practical flaws (like the autofocusing issue). The good news is that Amazon (Click here) is back accepting preorders , May a good sign that there is a new shipment of X100 cameras coming in Northamerica.

Samsung talks about the future

There is an interesting interview at Samsungimaging about the NX future. But the most exciting news here is the picture I do post below:

Those are all camera prototypes from Samsung. There is Hasselblad styled camera, a camera with nice old style manual controls that looks like the Leica X1 leathered camera. Only the white model looks really ugly :)

Panasonic G3 reviewed and tested. Gets positive ratings! And 25mm Lens coming soon!

The new Panasonic G3 has been announced and gets reviewed by Photographyblog. The very so impressed by the camera that they gave them the maximum ammount of starts 5 of 5! They also posted an interview with Panasonic (Click here) where Panasonic confirmed that they will soon announce the 25mm f/1.4 Leica branded Micro Four Thirds lens!
