Canon about the mirrorless competition: “there’s nothing that really frightens us.”

Dpreview interviewed Mr. Masaya Maeda from Canon Inc. and there are many statements about Canon mirrorless efforts:

1) Masaya says that Canon Japan would like to sell the EOS-M3 in USA but it’s Canon USA that doesn’t want that. Note: Here at Mirrorless rumors there is a name for that situation…we call it “Schizophrenia” :)

2) Masaya says that looking at all of the mirrorless cameras out there, there’s nothing that really frightens us. Note: Here at Mirrorless rumors there is a name for that situation…we call it “Delusional disorder” :)

A part of those two “diseases” Masaya shared some actual good news too:

1) He promised there will be more lenses for the EOS-M system
2) He also hinted a possible 4K GH4 competition coming from Canon

NAB show is coming in April and let’s hope to see that new EOS-M 4K Canon there!

Big Germany camera sales report: Mirrorless is on raise!

The German Photoindustrie Verband published and incredibly detailed report about the camera market sales in Germany. Here are some of their key findings:

1) The graph on tops shows how the system camera market is dropping. But the Mirrorless system cameras managed to growth(!) despite the fall of overall sales. The DSLR market is really falling rapidly.

2) Mirrorless system camera unit sales numbers did grow with 17,4% in 2014 compared to 2013. And overall revenue increased by 26,2%.

3) The surprising boom comes via Actioncameras:

4) In 2014 for the first time since many years also lens sales are dropping.

5) More charts show that Photo book sales are increasing while accessory sales are slowing down.

We are really on the verge of a big change in Germany. Wearables, smartphones and action cameras are the markets that are growing while the DSLR and compact camera market is falling. Mirrorless can hold the ground and even manages to have a growth. But still, system cameras will more and more become a niche product compared to the massive growth of the new kind of devices people are using to take pictures and videos.
